To earn this degree, you must complete the three components described in the following paragraphs.
This degree does not require a minor; however, we recommend considering a minor in English, English education, speech communication, or speech communication education.
Major Requirements54 hours

*Be aware that some courses required for your degree may have prerequisites that you must also take. Check all course descriptions to find out. (You may be able to count these prerequisites toward your liberal studies credit.)
You must also audition for scheduled theatre productions and work on crews for productions.
You must have a grade of C or better in ENG 105 and all courses required for your major as well as a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 in your major.
Be aware that we will only accept up to half of the courses required for your major as transfer credit.
Also, please note that NAU requires that at least 30 hours of the courses you take for your degree must be upper-division courses.
Major Requirements
You must complete the following 54 hours:
n TH 123, 130, 213, 223, 232, 331, and 352 (20 hours)
n TH 203 and 263 (6 hours)
n TH 351 or 451 (3 hours)
n TH 341W, which meets NAU’s junior-level writing requirement (3 hours)
n 22 hours of adviser-approved electives from TH 102, 112, 113, 133, 222, 242, 321, 332, and 442
Teacher-Preparation Requirements
You must complete 31 hours of professional courses offered by the Center for Excellence in Education to qualify for certification to teach theatre in Arizona and most other states.
For information about these requirements, see the heading Teacher Preparation in Secondary Education (within Instructional Leadership) in the Education section of this chapter. You should also receive advisement from the Center for Excellence in Education for this part of your academic program.
Please note that these 31 hours include ECI 495C, which meets NAU’s senior capstone requirement.
Liberal Studies Requirements
See the General Academic Requirements chapter of this catalog for information about the 35 hours of liberal studies credit that we require. Contact your department for information about liberal studies courses that are specific to this degree.
K-12 Endorsement
If you wish to obtain this optional endorsement to teach creative drama in Arizona elementary schools, you must also take the following 6 hours: ECI 302 and TH 531. (Because this endorsement is optional, these hours aren’t included in the 120 hours described for this degree.)

You may pursue one of the following minors:

Be aware that we will not accept more than half of the courses required for your minor in transfer credit.
Minor in Theatre
To complete this minor, you take the following 24 hours:
n TH 101 (3 hours)
n one of TH 331, 341W, or 451 (3 hours)
n 18 hours of TH courses approved by your adviser
Within these 24 hours, at least 9 hours must be in 100- or 200-level courses, 3-6 hours must be 300-level, and 3-6 hours must be 400-level.
Minor in Theatre Education
If you wish to include a theatre minor in a degree in education, you take the following 28 hours:
n TH 113 (1 hour)
n TH 130, 203, 232, 242, 331, 352, and 430 (21 hours)
n one of TH 341W, 351, or 451 (3 hours)
